The Cape Fear Bonsai Society (CFBS), organized in 2001, is a group of men and women who meet monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai. 


The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers and a sharing of collective Bonsai expertise.  Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai. 


You are invited to come on by, bring a tree to work on and get some dirt under your fingernails!

Mar 4, Saturday, Meeting and Workshop with Julian Adams at Northeast Regional Library 


     9:00 AM-Noon -- Brief meeting followed by a demonstration by Julian Adams of Adams Bonsai, Lynchburg, VA. 

     Julian will style 2 trees, a cotoneaster and a black pine seedling, as bonsai specimens.  He will also discuss

     the topic of fertilizing bonsai.  The workshop is free and open to the public.  This event will take place in the

     Pine Room at the Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington.


     1:30-4:30 PM -- Workshop with Julian Adams, cotoneaster and black pine seedling.  CFBS members only. 

     Workshop to be held at Bob's house in Leland. 



April 8, Saturday, Meeting and Workshop with Arthur Joura in Main Tent -- Azalea Festival, Downtown


     TBC AM -- Workshop with Arthur Joura, Azalea,  CFBS members only (location TBC)


     TBC PM -- Brief meeting followed by a demonstration by Arthur Joura, Curator of the Bonsai Collection at

     The North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville.  Arthur will style an azalea as a bonsai specimen.  The workshop

      is free and open to the public.




May 1, Monday, 7:00-9:00 PM, Meeting   


     Advanced topic:  IMP (Disease and pest control) (Speaker TBC) and Basic topic:  Prep a tree for show

     and bonsai display.  Additional:  Tree-of-the-Month Drawing


May 5 Friday, 4:00-9:00PM -- Set-up for show

May 27, Saturday, Demonstration and Workshop with Owen Reich (artist/location TBC)


      9:00-Noon -- Demonstration by Owen Reich of Bonsai Unearthed, Nashville, TN.  Owen will style a

     loropetalum as a bonsai specimen.  The workshop is free and open to the public.


     1:30-4:30 -- Workshop with Owen Reich.  CFBS members only (location TBC)




Jun 6, Tuesday, 7:00-9:00 PM, Meeting   


     Advanced topic:  Planting a maple forest demonstration by Dorice Nelson and Patti Mason.  The forest will be

     raffled at the end of the demonstration.  Basic topic:  Watering and caring for bonsai in the summer heat in

     coastal Carolina.



Jul 5, Wednesday, 7:00-9:00 PM, Meeting    


     Dinner at the Felix Care (TBC).  Advanced topic:  Competition on styling trees.  Basic topic:  Wiring   




Aug 1, Tuesday, 7:00-9:00 PM, Meeting


     Advanced topic:  Slide show of 2017 World Bonsai Show in Japan by Bob Pruski.  Basic topic:  Styling




Sep 6, Wednesday, 7:00-9:00 PM, Meeting


     Advanced topic:  Select trees and assemble CFBS display for Bonsai Expo.  Basic topic:  Winter care and

     storage of bonsai in coastal Carolina
