The Living Art of Bonsai in the Cape Fear Region
A welcoming community gathered along the river to study, shape, and develop trees through hands-on workshops, visiting artists, and shared practice.
Cape Fear Bonsai Society is a welcoming community dedicated to the study and practice of bonsai in Wilmington, North Carolina. We gather in person for demonstrations and workshops focused on developing healthy trees and strong foundations.
Rooted in the Cape Fear landscape, we draw inspiration from the river, cypress, and coastal climate that shape both our trees and our community.
Established in 2001, we continue to grow and evolve while staying rooted in community and craft.

This website is designed to do a few things well — and intentionally avoid doing more than we can reliably maintain.
The Cape Fear Bonsai Society is a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization focused on in-person learning, shared practice, and community connection around bonsai and penjing. Our website exists to support that mission by clearly sharing upcoming events, membership information, and ways to connect with us.
Bonsai and penjing have long been learned by working alongside others — studying trees, sharing experience, and passing knowledge from one person to another. We think that still works.
CFBS doesn’t need to be better at the internet than the internet. Our online presence is here to support the Society, not replace it. We keep it simple so we can:
Keep event information accurate and up to date
Make registration and membership straightforward
Help people understand what we do and how to join us
Spend more time together working on bonsai, and less time administering the internet
We try to run the club the same way we approach bonsai — with patience, restraint, and an eye toward the future.
